What are pores?

Pores are openings on the skin that are connected to sweat and sebaceous glands and they carry sweat and oil to the surface. However, it is not a muscle and therefore will not open or close as is sometimes thought.

What causes my pores look large?

Large pores can be caused by genes, but enlarged pores (later in life) are often caused by clogged pores and decreased elasticity.

The visibility of a pore is increased when the pore is filled with sebum and dead skin cells (whiteheads), especially when they oxidize and discolour (blackheads). If a clogged pore get inflamed then it will result in a pimple, acne, and this can also increase skin sensitivity.

A pore also becomes more visible when the skin loses its elasticity. The skin becomes less supple and the pore will appear larger.

How to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores?

To begin with, there are 2 things related to visibly enlarged pores in addition to genetics.
Take this into account when preventing and reducing.

1. More visible due to: clogged pore by sebum and dead skin cells.
2. More visible due to: reduced skin elasticity.

Now that we know why our pores have become more visible over time we can adapt our routine more appropriate.

Approach clean pores:

1. Clean the skin daily in the morning and evening.
2. Double cleanse every evening first with an oil-based cleanser to keep the dirty, bad oils away.
3. Always remove makeup before you go to bed.
4. Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells.
5. Avoid too heavy (oils in) products that may clog the pores.
6. Reduce excess production of sebum by keeping the pores healthy and balanced.

Approach elasticity:

1. Use a moisturizer that is suitable for your skin type every day in the morning and evening.
2. Protect the skin daily in the morning against the UV rays of the sun which reduces skin elasticity. Use a separate sunscreen with at least SPF factor 30 for every morning (also in winter).
3. Keeps skin well hydrated, nourished and balanced.
