What are wrinkles?
Wrinkles are creases, folds, or ridges in the skin. They are a natural part of the aging process. The first wrinkles usually appear on the face in areas where the skin naturally folds during facial expressions. They develop as a result of the skin becoming thinner and less elastic over time.
What causes premature wrinkles?
Internal factors play a major role in the formation of wrinkles:
- Genetics and heredity: Your biological blueprint.
- Reduced collagen production: Due to age-related factors.
- Muscle activity: Movements during expressions and facial movements.
However, external factors are the primary cause of premature skin aging, as they break down skin cells at an accelerated rate:
- UVA and UVB radiation: The biggest external culprit.
- Free radicals: Caused by smoking, pollution (fine dust), and oxidation on the skin.
When we are young, our body is able to produce collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid at a high rate, keeping the skin firm and well-hydrated. There are also plenty of antioxidants present to easily flush out toxins.
However, from around our 25th year of life, the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid begins to slow down, and the presence of antioxidants decreases as well. This process accelerates with age. That is why it is highly recommended to start your anti-aging journey around this age, focusing on prevention through a healthy lifestyle and the right skincare.
Skin type trivia: A dry skin barrier is more prone to developing fine dehydration lines, which can eventually turn into permanent wrinkles. On the other hand, skin that produces more sebum (oily or combination skin) often gets a bit luckier! ;)
How can I reduce fine lines and prevent wrinkles?
Remember that premature skin aging is heavily linked to external factors that impact our moisture barrier, collagen production, and the removal of cellular waste. By smartly addressing these factors, you can keep your skin looking youthful and radiant.
