Applications and waiting times

You may have set up a reasonably good routine by now, but yet you only notice few improvements. In addition to finding the right products and routine, it often has to do with the right combination of applications.

Do you use a clean towel for drying your face or rather using your hands? Are you waiting too long or too short before continuing with the next step? - If you recognize yourself in these questions, then take a look at the list below.

1. Clean your face in the evening before you step into the shower!
The heat in your bathroom has the effect of a sauna which "opens" your pores and your skin will just absorb the layer of dirt, oil and makeup. -- If you still prefer to wash your face in the shower... Make sure you've already used a makeup remover / oil-based cleanser before you have warmed up the bathroom.

2. Prevent wrinkle forming and irritations, avoid too many frictions on the face!
By allowing the water-based cleanser to foam on your hands, you will prevent friction on your face which possibly will irritate the skin and accelerate wrinkle forming.

If you use a cleansing tool such as a cleansing pad, brush or cloth, make sure it is gentle enough for the skin and renew it regularly!

3. Skip the makeup wipes!
Makeup wipes can be an easy solution after a long day to quickly cleanse your face, but do not end your cleansing routine here!

These wipes are often rough on the skin and due to the friction you will notice that the skin gets irritated. The wipes often do not remove enough dirt and makeup so you will just automatically start rubbing harder on your face (and this will create fine lines).

Make sure when using makeup wipes that you gently sweep over the face, and do not rub. Therefore, first place the (folded) cloth on the areas where a lot of makeup is located, such as eyes and lips, and then gently wipe it away.

But the best thing is of course to skip these wipes and go for a makeup remover / oil-based cleanser which cleanses many times better and is more gentle to the skin!

4. Skip the towel!
Often, towels will stay in a damp bathroom, which is a great breeding ground for bacteria, and that is exactly what you do not want on your freshly cleansed face! Therefore use a soft tissue to dab the water from your face. And even better / more ecologi(/ecnomi)cal, use your clean hands to get the water from your face!

If you still want to use a towel, make sure you change it daily. And only use the towel to dap your face to dry, never rub!

The application

1. Toners
Is it a very liquid toner (often pH toners)? Then you can best apply it in combination with a cotton pad.

Is the toner a bit thicker and more gel-like (often essence toners)? Then it would be best to put a few drops directly on your palms and dab it on face.

Do you use both? Then start with the most liquid + cotton pad and then continue with the thicker so that the skin can "drink" it.

2. Light textures: essence / serum / ampoule / emulsion / oil
Take a small amount (1 ~ 2 drops / pump) of these liquid products on the palms and apply to face. Then use the palms to dap them in until it is absorbed.

Sometimes these products come in handy drippers so you can drip them directly on the 'trouble-areas' for a targeted treatment.

3. Cream-like textures: lotion / cream
These "solid" textures can best be dotted on the face (cheeks, forehead, nose) first, and then be tapped in for absorption.

Sequence and waiting times

After you have prepared your face with a (pH) toner you can start with the real work. Basically, after the toner you can start with the thinnest product (essence) and finish with the thickest (moisturizer).

Every product needs to be applied to damp skin! So never wait until your skin has fully dried up to continue with the next step, this way the skin will find difficulties in absorbing moisture and nutrients from the products.

1. Exception: eye creams
Although most of the products we sell are very gentle, yet they are often not specifically tested on the skin around the eyes because this is not required for non-eye care products. It is therefore wise to nourish and protect the thin and sensitive skin around our eyes with a product that has been specially made and tested for that area.

Some might use an eye cream before the essence / serum step and others might say it should be done afterwards. What we at Haru Haru recommend is to start with your eye care before you start with the rest of your face. This way you are assured of a safe area around the eyes. - You will tense less easily to use a product there (unconsciously) which may not be suitable for around the eyes.

2. Exception: AHA / BHA / Vitamin C serum
Products with a low pH value (acid) works best at the beginning of the routine in combination with a clean skin. Therefore, use these after cleansing in the example sequence:
Cleaning> pH Toner> AHA / BHA / Vitamin C serum> Essence toner / Essence> Serum / Ampoule> Moisturizer

Sometimes these products also require a longer absorption time, so please wait 10 ~ 15 minutes before continuing.

Also pay attention to sun protection in the morning if you use these products due to their exfoliating effects ... So wear a sun screen with SPF30 or higher protection.

3. Exception: face oil
Face oils need some time until absorbed and even after absorption there is still a layer of oil on the skin barrier, which is very nice in the evening to provide the skin with hydration and protection.

However, this will not be convenient during the day because the facial oil can break down your BB cream / foundation and other make-up. (Oil melts away oil)

That is why we advise you to leave the face oil during the day, if you are planning to use makeup.

Sun protection

1. Application
Apply sun protection in the morning as the last step of your skin care routine before you continue with make-up.

2. Waiting time
Does your sun protection contain mineral filters such as Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide (such as the Oh My Sun Protection from Yadah)? Then you can leave the house immediately after application, but if your sun protection only has chemical filters and none of the mentioned ingredients above, then you will unfortunately have to wait 20 ~ 30 minutes until it's okay to greet the UV-rays.

3. Re-applying
It is recommended to protect yourself again every 2 hours against the UV radiation. Are you outside the whole day and you will want to protect yourself again, it might be difficult. -- Fortunately, besides BB creams with SPF in cushion format, there are nowadays also sun protection in cushion format, which makes it very convenient to take along. Or you can DIY a SPF cushion of your used compact.
