We often see the word WHITENING on packages of Korean skin care products, but this is usually a mistranslation and it has much more to do with BRIGHTEING. Skin tone evening, reducing pigment spots and such.

There are 3 types of brightening:

Why should we do it?

A dull skin often looks old and tired, and when we look at the skin of young children it is often clear and smooth.

In the west a tan is often desired and seen as healthy, so it is not that strange if we are encountered with more tanning products than brightening products. In Asia, this is the opposite, a skin with dark pigments is often considered as a skin that is aging. Therefore, in countries such as Japan and Korea you will notice much more brightening/whitening products.

Pale skin
Pale skin does not necessarily mean that it is "bright". A pale skin may look dull, this is often because it's dry and flakey. In this case it is important to protect your skin against the sun and provide moisture to the skin, exfoliate and use a brightening mask on a weekly basis.

The sun
UVA / UVB has only 2 minutes to turn your skin to red, and 25 minutes to get dark. Once the dark pigments settle down then these will no longer be small dots, but will become ultimately stains on your skin.


There are various methods to brighten your skin:
A - Exfoliatingto remove the toplayer of dirt and deadskincells that has been sitting on your face as a mask.
B - Moisture: a dehydrated/dry skin looks easily dull and exhausted.
C - Cell renewal: dark pigments will rise from the lower layer to the top. With a slow cell renewal these pigments will stay longer at the top, so the brightening process will take longer.
However, you can stimulate cell renewal process by stimulating your bloodcirculation. Try these following methods:

  • Take 1 cold and 1 warm towel, put this alternately on your face. This in addition to improve the blood circulation and also the skin's elasticity.
  • Tap your face after applying facial products, this stimulates your skin and awakens it.
  • Treat yourself occasionally with a facial massage. This helps to detox, improves the complexion, improves elasticity and strengthens muscles.
Important with brightening is to protect your skin from the harmful radiation rays of the sun. Therefore it is extremely important to always finish your morning skincare routine with proper sun protection.
